It’s Over

I found him.  I found Jack.  In the hospital, Steven Wrot told me everything.  Jack was an Outsider; who came into our world through the four initial victims.  Kendel, Wrot, Gernstein, and Rickenbauker, they all knew each other, just like I suspected.  They were a little club that liked to get together and talk about the Puncture.  They had been planning a little secret excursion into the Puncture for quite a while, and last month, they went in.  It’s no joke sneaking past the government security guarding the beam, so I have to hand it to them, they knew what they were doing.  But there was no way they could prepare themselves for what they would find on the other side.  Sure enough, they got lost in that place between worlds.  They never would have found their way back without the help of someone who knew the way.  Unfortunately, that person turned out to be Jack.

He made a deal with them.  He would show them the way back home, if they let him tag along.  I guess they didn’t see any other option; they let him come back with them, and he clung to them like a parasite.  The apartment I traced him to used to be Gernstein and Wrot’s old apartment, they were roommates.  Jack must have made that place his little domain.  Steven and Rebecca moved out to try and get away from him, but he found away to keep his connection with them, through the phone lines.  The rest is history.  Like a virus, he spread from person to person through their phone lines, growing in malevolent power.

After my visit to Wrot in the hospital, I went to that apartment to confront Jack, and hopefully bring him in peacefully.  As it turned out, at the time I arrived, he was calling one of lines I had tapped, Rebecca Gernstein’s line.  I have a recording of the whole thing.

I wasn’t sure what to expect when I’d find him.  I brought my gun in case he’d turn violent, but I had no idea if he’d even be a tangible being.  Well I suppose he was tangible enough, because the bullet killed him.  I called the police afterward, and explained what went down when they arrived.  They didn’t raise much of a fuss over the dead Outsider, I think they were just glad they didn’t have to deal with him.

The calls have stopped altogether.  All of my clients are reporting the same thing, they’ve stopped getting calls from Jack and they feel as though some pressure was released from over them.  That must have been Jack’s psychological hold, it died when he did.  I’m just glad it’s over now; if I can go the rest of my life without having to encounter someone like Jack again, I’ll consider my career a success.  But I somehow doubt it.  I’ve gotten quite a bit of notoriety from this case.  When I got back to my office, I had almost a dozen messages from different people describing new, stranger cases.  If things keep moving in this direction, I’ll have to up my game and hire a staff.  Sardic Investigations is moving up.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ Victim Chart

I mapped out the order in which Jack’s calls spread from person to person.  The infection is spreading exponentially, so after only a few steps, his calls become to far-reaching to track.  But in terms of finding him, the later steps aren’t important anyway.  They’re just the effects of him growing.  No, the only way I’m going to find out how this all started is through the initial four victims who were “infected” with Jack’s calls and unknowingly spread them through their phones.  Their names are Mavin Kendel, Steven Wrot, Rebecca Gernstein, and Robert Rickenbauker.

Oddly enough, Kendel, Gernstein, and Rickenbauker are being very quiet about how all this happened.  There is definitely something they aren’t telling me, which leads me to believe they all stumbled upon Jack together.  When this investigation started, I thought I was the one not telling them about each other.  But now I think they already knew one another, and didn’t tell me they were connected.  Even now, each of them act as though they don’t know the other three, but I think they always have.  Still, they let me tap their lines so I can find Jack, so I don’t think they’re protecting him.  I think they are all afraid of him, and that’s why they won’t tell me everything.  I got that neighborhood’s location from Kendel’s line, which is a huge step to finding Jack, but I don’t want to go in unprepared.  I need more information, and they won’t give me anything.

Wrot is another story.  He’s lost it, and I hear from my contacts at the hospital that he’s going on and on about Jack and the others.  It only confirms my suspicions that they knew each other.  I’m going there to talk to him.  Maybe he can shed some light on this case and tell me how Jack got out in the first place.  Maybe he’ll be willing to talk, when his friends won’t.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ Jack Called

We finally caught a break!  Jack called one of my clients.  Luckily, it was one of the four tapped lines we had set up.  The call was interesting, I wasn’t expecting such a strange sounding person.  Now I’m sure he’s an Outsider.  I’m posting the recording for purposes of people informing themselves of what Jack sounds like so they know what to look for.  If you ever get a call like this, hang up immediately.  In fact, don’t listen to this recording any more than you have to.  I don’t know how Jack drives people crazy, but this recording could be dangerous if Jack’s effects stuck with it.

The call was even long enough that I was able to track him to a neighborhood in Brooklyn.  I’m about to head over and start looking around for his whereabouts.  With any luck, the neighbors will point me in the right direction.  Someone who’s presence can affect phone lines so severely will definitely be noticeable to people living near him.  So actually finding him shouldn’t be too once I’m in the area.  What I’m most worried about is what happens when I find him.  This guy is dangerous, enough so that the cops won’t be of any help.  They’ve wised up to how dangerous Outsiders can be, especially when they decide to get violent.  And something tells me Jack will definitely be violent.  I’ll report in with my findings tomorrow.  Wish me luck.  Hopefully by tomorrow this case will be settled once and for all.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ Line Tapping

Well, I’ve convinced four different clients to let me tap their phone lines so we can get a recording of Jack when he calls.  His calls are completely unpredictable, both in content from what I’ve been told, and in timing.  I just finished setting up the last tap and have each one routed to my office, so when Jack calls, I’ll be listening.

One of my clients has been committed to a psychiatric ward in the hospital.  The police found him in the street, waving a knife around and screaming about Jack and something he told him to do.  I visited him and tried to get details on what Jack told him, but he was just too far gone.  A few others are starting to act strangely as well, less balanced.  I can tell almost none of my clients are getting much sleep anymore; they’re all just too worried.  The worst part is that Jack is still spreading.  I’m getting more and more calls now that people are hearing that I’m the one to go to for this problem.  I’m getting more business now than I’ve ever had before, but I wish it didn’t happen like this.  I’m almost certain that Jack is an Outsider; a regular person just can’t do this kind of stuff.  I have to find him.

To this end, I’m putting up a new page on this site dedicated to Jack, and information about him.  I’m opening this investigation to the public domain.  If you, or someone you know, has been contacted by Jack, call my primary line, or send me an email.  Look at the page on Jack; it contains valuable information on what is known about him, his behaviors, and how to protect yourself from him as best we know how.

__________________________________________________________________________________________ Jack

Offices all over New York have been discreetly collaborating regarding this Jack person.  At first it was just the other investigation agencies, but now businesses all over.  People from seemingly unrelated agencies keep calling in, asking for information or help on this Jack.  He is spreading like a virus, bringing fear wherever he appears.  But he doesn’t ever seem to actually appear.  Nobody has ever seen Jack, they just get calls from him, or emails, texts.  I’ve been pouring over the transcripts of phone conversations, and am working with a few clients on tapping phone lines.  This Jack person speaks to people in agencies as though he is some sort of superior, a disgruntled boss who has always been there.  But he clearly hasn’t.

There’s been little to no coordination in-house at any of these agencies.  Everyone, on every level, seems terrified of this Jack character.  To some degree, it feels like these people have let Jack take charge.  Unbeknownst to each other, I’ve been establishing my clients’ reports of Jack’s infiltration.  I’ve had over a dozen separate cases opened, all about a mysterious executive-type named Jack, and all completely unrelated otherwise.  These people don’t even know I’m working with other businesses on the same case.

I’m labeling this collection of cases as one large, inter-sourced case.  I don’t know if this Jack guy is something to do with the mob, or maybe some kind of corporate scheme.  Maybe he’s an Outsider.  Whatever he is, Sardic Investigations is going to find out.
